Romania’s Deep State Strikes Again: Election Winner Călin Georgescu Interrogated for Hours

In a shocking display of political persecution, Romanian authorities have launched an aggressive legal assault on presidential frontrunner Călin Georgescu, the clear winner of the annulled December elections. Prosecutors have accused him of so-called “campaign finance irregularities,” “anti-Semitic rhetoric,” and even “threats to the constitutional order”—all conveniently vague charges often used to silence political opposition.

On Wednesday, Georgescu was dragged in for hours of interrogation over allegations that he founded an “anti-Semitic” organization, praised historical figures the regime disapproves of, and dared to challenge the establishment’s narrative. While the authorities stopped short of pre-trial detention, they placed him under judicial supervision and banned him from leaving the country—effectively keeping him under house arrest as the May election approaches.

His press team issued a statement pointing out the obvious: Georgescu was set to file his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election rerun on the very day of his detainment. The court-ordered redo of the December elections was based on flimsy claims of “social media disinformation,” showing just how terrified the ruling class is of losing its grip on power.

Mass Raids and Political Intimidation

Romanian authorities ramped up their intimidation tactics on the same day, raiding 47 locations tied to Georgescu’s allies. Among the targets was Horatiu Potra, a former Foreign Legion soldier and private security contractor, whose company provides security for Georgescu. Prosecutors claimed they found a “stash of weapons and cash” at his firm—a conveniently timed discovery that smells of a setup designed to smear the candidate and his inner circle.

Elon Musk Calls Out the Corruption

The establishment’s assault on democracy hasn’t gone unnoticed. Billionaire entrepreneur and free speech advocate Elon Musk—an ally of President Donald Trump—took to X to condemn the arrest.

“They just arrested the person who won the most votes in the Romanian presidential election,” Musk wrote. “This is messed up.”

A Rigged System?

The Romanian deep state has been working overtime to derail Georgescu’s candidacy. In December, just two days before the second round of voting, the Constitutional Court shockingly annulled the first-round results, claiming Georgescu’s rise was influenced by “Russian-backed social media manipulation”—a now-familiar excuse used by globalist elites to discredit populist movements.

The first round of the new presidential election is set for May 4, with a runoff two weeks later. A mid-January Avangarde poll showed Georgescu leading with 38% support. However, with the deep state pulling every trick in the book, it remains to be seen whether the people of Romania will even be allowed to vote for the candidate they actually support.
