Sarkozy Sentenced to Prison in Illegal Campaign Financing Case

Today, a court in Paris sentenced former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who served as France’s president from 2007 to 2012, to five years in prison in a case concerning the illegal financing of his election campaign using funds from Libya.

What did the court rule?

The court found that in 2006 funds from Libya reached France, but it could not justify claims that this money directly funded the election campaign. At the same time, it determined that the former president engaged in criminal conspiracy and allowed his close collaborators to contact Libyan representatives to seek funding.

There is a verdict… The court issued the sentence with a suspended execution; no later than within a month, Sarkozy will be summoned by the prosecutor’s office, which will set the date for imprisonment – AFP reported. Appealing the verdict will not suspend this decision.
