“I have been saying clearly since 2019: ETS in its current form must be scrapped,” said former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in his latest video posted on X. He warned of Europe’s inevitable failure across multiple fields if the European Union does not change its main policy direction.
The European Commission has proposed that the European Union commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent compared to 1990 levels. The 2040 target is intended as an interim step – leading to the achievement of climate neutrality by the bloc in 2050.
Experts are also warning that the introduction of the ETS 2 system in 2027 will result in a drastic increase in heating and electricity bills, as well as a sharp rise in unemployment.
The EU tax was also addressed on Saturday by the head of the European Conservatives and Reformists, Mateusz Morawiecki.
“This is a system that is suffocating the European economy. It is ruining household budgets, and above all it is devastating the Polish economy. Because of ETS, Poles are paying outrageous bills for electricity, gas, pellets – for all energy carriers.”
He recalled that he had already called for liberalizing the emissions trading system in the “Rescue Plan for Europe” – a document prepared by the Work Team for Poland.
“ETS is a tax that strangles household budgets and devastates the economy. Europe must change. Time is running out. If it does not, it will lose economically, technologically, politically and socially,” he concluded.
