Sejm Erupts in Defense of Adam Borowski: “This Is Crude Political Revenge!”

“What you are doing to Adam Borowski, a hero of the struggle for a free Poland, whom you are sending to prison for criticizing Roman Giertych, is crude political revenge. This is the result of your delusions about ‘neo-judges’, your denunciations, and your pleading for Brussels to interfere in the Polish judiciary”, said Jarosław Sachajko, addressing the ruling camp.

The head of the Warsaw club of Gazeta Polska and a legendary anti-communist opposition activist, Adam Borowski, has been sentenced to six months of unconditional imprisonment for criticizing Roman Giertych. Borowski is a stroke survivor and is battling cancer.

Speaking in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland in defense of Borowski, Sachajko accused politicians of the Civic Platform (KO) of “devastating the judiciary through petty political maneuvering.”

“What you are doing to Adam Borowski, a hero of the struggle for a free Poland, whom you are sending to prison for criticizing Roman Giertych, is crude political revenge. This is the result of your delusions about ‘neo-judges’, your denunciations, and your pleading for Brussels to interfere in the Polish judiciary. You have turned some judges into politicians – compliant functionaries who, instead of serving Poland, carry out your political orders”, he said.

He further argued that “every judge who betrays the constitution and the oath of office should be stripped of the right to work in all legal professions. Enough lawlessness in the courts.”

The case, in which attorney Roman Giertych acts as a private prosecutor, was heard by the District Court for Warsaw-Śródmieście, 2nd Criminal Division. The Civic Platform (KO) MP, offended by remarks made over a year ago, decided to pursue criminal proceedings. He accused Borowski under Article 212 §2 of the Polish Penal Code and also demanded payment of 200,000 złoty.

The private indictment concerned a specific quote. The words – referring to the Polnord scandal – were spoken during a program on TV Republika.
