Signatures Collected, but Tusk’s People Challenge Piotrków Residents’ Decision. What’s Next for the Referendum?

“No to illegal migration, yes to a referendum. We will chase away all those who are bringing illegal immigrants into Poland from the German side” – said today in Piotrków Trybunalski, PiS MP Janusz Kowalski.

In Piotrków Trybunalski, the collection of signatures under two notifications of intent to hold a referendum has been completed. One concerns opposition to the establishment, construction, and organization of the Foreigners Integration Center (CIC) and the relocation of illegal immigrants in Piotrków Trybunalski. The second is a motion to dismiss the city council and the mayor of Piotrków Trybunalski, Juliusz Wiernicki (PO).

Nevertheless, complications arose in the form of a decision by the commissioner rejecting the motion of Piotrków Trybunalski residents. Details were shared today during a press conference.

“Today we are gathered here because the referendum campaign is already underway regarding the referendum motion against the Foreigners Integration Center and against the relocation of migrants to Piotrków Trybunalski. And because today we are filing a complaint, through the electoral commissioner, with the Provincial Administrative Court, against the commissioner’s decision rejecting our motion. We must clearly point out that the commissioner’s decision was laconic, rejected one third of the signatures, and therefore we cannot agree with this – that the residents of Piotrków Trybunalski are treated as if they were not admitted and did not have full civic rights. That is why this complaint, 11 pages long, substantive, addressing the commissioner’s objections, will be filed today at the commissioner’s office” – said Beata Dróżdż, the referendum’s initiator.

“We do not agree to this”

Later, Robert Bąkiewicz from the Border Defense Movement (ROG) took the floor. As he noted, ROG “has supported this referendum from the beginning, and it is painful to say today that local authorities and local groups connected to Donald Tusk and the ruling coalition are protected – that is how I see it – by the National Electoral Commission(PKW) and by the commissioner in this case.”

“One third of the signatures were rejected. This is simply a scandal, which we cannot accept. Here, regarding the second referendum, we also face a pathological situation. Because how else to call a situation where authorities closely linked to Donald Tusk constantly block public debate and discussion about the Foreigners Integration Center and the settlement of migrants in this place. We oppose these actions. This clearly shows that even at the local government level, migration policy is being pushed, or actions to neutralize this policy are being blocked, also through various administrative means. We do not agree to this. We will fight so that Piotrków residents can have their referenda, and we are well prepared for this. I hope that soon, after victory in the Administrative Court, we will be able to dismiss these authorities here, who deserve a red card for how they treat the residents and for quietly accepting migration policy, which is not accepted in Poland or in Piotrków” – Bąkiewicz explained.

Also present in Piotrków Trybunalski was Law and Justice MP, Janusz Kowalski. In his view: “Tusk’s people and Tusk himself are afraid of the residents of Piotrków Trybunalski. And they are afraid of Poles.”

“6,400 residents of Piotrków submitted signatures for a referendum on dismissing this currently serving mayor from Civic Platform and the city council – so open to receiving illegal immigrants, even from Germany. And suddenly one third of the signatures are invalidated. That is how afraid they are. They are afraid of the voice of the residents of Piotrków Trybunalski, who clearly want to say ‘no’ to illegal migration. Ms. Beata Dróżdż, as the initiator of this referendum, continues the fight. I hope that the court will overturn this outrageous and political decision of Tusk’s team. And that the residents of Piotrków Trybunalski will, in a referendum, be able to express themselves in order to chase away this harmful PO authority” – he stated.

“Wherever anyone supports Tusk’s migration policy at the expense of Polish families, referenda must be organized. No to illegal migration, yes to a referendum. We will chase away all those who are bringing illegal immigrants into Poland from the German side” – he added.
