SOP Officer Suspended. Żaryn: “It May Turn Out That Not a Hair Fell from His Head”

“The case is shocking and should be the subject of a thorough analysis regarding the career of this SOP officer. Why did he get assigned to the unit protecting the most important people in the country, since talking about plans to murder a journalist who wrote something about him is a story straight out of gangster movies, not a professional service protecting Poland,” Stanisław Żaryn, former Director of the National Security Department in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, told Niezalezna.pl.

TV Republika revealed shocking recordings on its broadcast. The case concerns an officer of the State Protection Service (Służba Ochrony Państwa, SOP), Lt. Col. Wojciech B., code-named “Biszkopt”. In a fragment of a conversation published from February 2024 with two other people, the man responsible for the security of the country’s most important officials, including the current Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski, allegedly planned a brutal crime against Piotr Nisztor.

The State Protection Service has initiated disciplinary proceedings and suspended the officer from his duties, while only today has a report on the potential commission of a crime been sent to the prosecutor’s office, according to information provided by SOP in response to questions from our portal.

“A story from a gangster movie, not a key state service”

“The case is shocking and should be the subject of a thorough analysis regarding the career of this State Protection Service officer,” Stanisław Żaryn told Niezalezna.pl.

Why did he get assigned to the unit protecting the most important people in the country, since talking about plans to murder a journalist who wrote something about him is a story straight out of gangster movies, not a professional service protecting Poland, he added.

“There must be a firm reaction from the government. From available information, we know that this officer has already been suspended from his duties. The question is under what conditions and on what terms, because it may turn out that not a hair fell from his head. There are a number of questions in this matter that need clarification,” he continued.

“Those in power should offer protection to editor Piotr Nisztor and his family, because this situation shows a real threat to him and his loved ones,” the expert suggested.

“It is also impossible to avoid the issue that caused this officer’s behavior. Editor Nisztor pointed to the pathological actions of officers previously from the Government Protection Bureau, and today of the State Protection Service, who make side money and engage in actions unworthy of an officer tasked with protecting the most important people in Poland,” he added.

“This also raises questions about the situation in the uniformed services overseen by the government,” he concluded.
