South Korea: Soldiers Enter Parliament Amid Martial Law Dispute

South Korea witnessed a dramatic escalation in political tensions as special forces entered the National Assembly building in Seoul, according to reports from the BBC and Yonhap news agency. Opposition lawmakers are seeking to nullify President Yoon Suk Yeol’s declaration of martial law through a parliamentary vote.

The military presence included barricades around the parliament building and three helicopters landing on-site, unloading armed soldiers. Yonhap reported that approximately 70 opposition members remain inside the building, with others gathered outside. National Assembly Speaker Wu Won-shik is expected to call for a vote upon arrival.

Update

In a swift turn of events, the National Assembly has voted to overturn the president’s martial law decree. South Korea’s constitution requires the president to comply with the parliamentary majority’s decision, signaling a pivotal moment in the nation’s ongoing political crisis.

The situation remains fluid, with the country closely monitoring developments as democratic institutions face a critical test.
