“Straight out of Putin’s playbook.” Former Thatcher adviser shocked by Tusk’s government actions

“The premiership of Donald Tusk is a tragedy for Poland. He is a puppet of the arrogant EU elites who fear democracy and national sovereignty,” wrote Nile Gardiner, a conservative commentator and former adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, on social media.

For several days now, members of the Civic Coalition have been increasingly vocal in promoting a narrative that questions the outcome of Poland’s presidential election, in which the civic candidate Karol Nawrocki defeated the Civic Coalition’s Rafał Trzaskowski. What began with radical groups such as “Silni Razem” and Roman Giertych has now been echoed by ministers in Donald Tusk’s government.

Such actions undermine democracy and erode public trust in the Polish state.

“Thatcher would have been appalled and greatly saddened”

Michał Moskal, a Member of Parliament from Law and Justice (PiS), posted on social media that today the Minister of Justice — a close ally of Tusk — is “suggesting that the election result might be considered invalid.”

— State-run media are repeating suggestions about a “stolen vote.” This is not post-election analysis. It’s propaganda paving the way for a coup. When elites deny reality, they are not defending democracy — they are laying the groundwork for autocracy, Moskal wrote.

Nile Gardiner responded to the post. The British conservative commentator and former adviser to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher stated:

He also emphasized that the White House should condemn what is happening in Poland — “a threat to democracy in the heart of Europe.”
