“Strengthening Transatlantic Cooperation”. US Media on the Trump-Nawrocki Meeting

The symbolism of the first foreign visit of the new President of Poland, the partnership between Poland and the United States, and the maintenance of a strong American military presence in our country – these were among the main topics dominating overseas media coverage of President Karol Nawrocki’s visit to Washington. “The event received significantly more attention than last month’s presidential inauguration,” emphasized Tomasz Winiarski, an American studies expert.

On Wednesday, during his meeting with Nawrocki, Trump declared that American soldiers would remain in Poland, and if Poles wished, the US could deploy even more. Nawrocki conveyed that during the closed part of the meeting at the White House, he had discussed with President Trump the possibility of increasing both the number and the permanent presence of US troops in Poland.

After the talks, President Nawrocki gave an exclusive interview to TV Republika. He spoke, among other things, about the issue of the presence of US Army soldiers in our country.

“Since February, there has been public debate, but also through official statistics and reviews in the United States, about the redeployment of American soldiers from Europe. This is linked to a certain change in the global security architecture. (…) Hence today’s very important declaration by President Donald Trump, that there are no plans to reduce the US military component in Poland,” he pointed out.

During the talks, President Karol Nawrocki invited the American leader to Poland.

“I invited President Trump to Poland, though we have not yet set a date. I think it could be next year (…) For the entire region, it would be excellent if President Trump visited Warsaw,” emphasized the President of Poland.

Emphasizing Strategic Relations

In a broader perspective, American media devoted noticeably more attention to the Nawrocki-Trump meeting than, for example, to last month’s presidential inauguration – underlined Tomasz Winiarski in an interview with the portal Niezależna.pl.

In their coverage of President Karol Nawrocki’s visit to the White House and his talks with Donald Trump, liberal media strongly highlighted tensions between the President and Donald Tusk’s government, pointing out that Nawrocki represents a more right-wing part of the political scene and is pursuing his own line of foreign contacts. “The New York Times” even wrote about internal divisions in Poland and Nawrocki’s distancing himself from the government, which, according to the paper, is formally responsible for foreign and defense policy, our interlocutor noted.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press (AP) sought to underscore the importance of Trump’s assurances about maintaining a strong military presence in Poland, portraying the visit as an attempt to strengthen transatlantic cooperation in the face of ongoing Russian aggression, he added.

Commentary from the conservative FOX News channel and the New York Post newspaper focused mainly on Trump’s sharp responses to Polish journalist Marek Wałkuski, who accused him of inaction against Russia. In these media reports, the dominant message was Trump’s reply that his indirect sanctions on India (as the main buyer of Russian crude oil) were evidence of White House activity in this regard, he added.

By contrast, Newsweek described Nawrocki’s visit as part of a political game, noting that the American military presence in Poland was a process that began back in 2018 under Operation Atlantic Resolve (OAR). In this view, Trump’s promises were interpreted more as a political gesture than as a sign of an imminent, fundamental shift in Polish-American relations, the expert conveyed.

Media also consistently pointed out the symbolism of the Polish President’s first foreign visit and his closeness to Trump, but some reported it primarily through the prism of Poland’s internal tensions and the broader geopolitical game around the war in Ukraine and the role of the US in Europe in connection with the planned review of the American military presence in Europe – of which Poland is a very important part, he concluded.
