Tadeusz Grabowski: Celebrating a Literary Scholar’s Legacy

On October 29, we honour the birth of Tadeusz Grabowski, born in 1871 in Kraków, whose lifelong dedication to Polish literary history made a lasting impact on academia. A noted historian and professor, Grabowski’s career spanned both Jagiellonian University and the University of Poznań, where his work covered a range of subjects, from Romanticism and Enlightenment literature to Reformation-era writings.

Coming from a patriotic family, Grabowski pursued higher education at the Jagiellonian University and furthered his studies in Paris. His research produced groundbreaking analyses, notably on the philosopher-poet Juliusz Słowacki, whose work he explored in depth, as well as broader studies on literary criticism’s evolution in Poland. His scholarly approach was marked by meticulous attention to literary movements and traditions across different periods.

Grabowski’s contributions extended beyond research; he was also a dedicated educator who continued to teach during World War II despite the adversities, even taking part in underground education efforts in Poznań. His work was recognized with prestigious honours, such as the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Legion of Honor, reflecting his influence both in Poland and abroad.

Passing away in 1960, Grabowski left behind a rich legacy of publications, including influential texts like *The History of Polish Literature* and *New Science of Literature.* His works continue to shape the understanding of Poland’s literary heritage, inspiring scholars and students to this day.
