Tensions Rise Over U.S. Base in Poland as Russia Issues Threats

Russia has issued stark threats against the newly opened U.S. missile defense base in Redzikowo, Poland, calling it a “priority target for potential destruction.” This warning, delivered by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, has sparked strong reactions from the United States. Zakharova also claimed the base’s establishment increases nuclear risks.

John Kirby, spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, dismissed the threats as reckless but emphasized their gravity. “We take these comments seriously and are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of our troops in Europe,” Kirby said. He also reiterated the U.S.’s unwavering commitment to NATO allies under Article V, stating, “President Biden is resolute on this. Our obligations to NATO allies are ironclad.”

In a related development, Kirby seemingly confirmed for the first time that the U.S. has authorized Ukraine to use ATACMS ballistic missiles on Russian territory. He noted that Ukraine has been employing the missiles effectively, particularly in areas around Russia’s Kursk region. “We’ve adjusted the rules to enable Ukraine to strike specific targets, but I’ll let them speak to their strategies,” Kirby added.

This shift marks a significant development in U.S. policy, further escalating tensions amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
