Polish President Submits Cryptocurrency Bill to Sejm, Vowing to End “Farcical Political Stalemate”

“Today, a presidential draft law on crypto-assets was submitted to the Sejm. This draft is a compromise and is meant to put an end to the farcical dance of Donald Tusk and the coalition, and to meet the expectations of those who are calling for market regulation,” said the Head of the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, Zbigniew Bogucki.

Bogucki announced during a press conference that the President of the Republic of Poland had submitted the draft law on crypto-assets to the Sejm.

“The draft is based on three pillars. The first is the protection of consumers and investors, the second – real and effective state supervision, and the third – safeguarding the constitutional rights of entrepreneurs operating in the crypto-asset market,” indicated the head of the Chancellery of the President.

He assessed that the presidential proposal “is a compromise aimed at ending the farcical dance of Tusk and the coalition and responding to those who expect market regulation.” He added that the prime minister, on the issue of cryptocurrency legislation, “is heading straight into a wall.”

“The presidential draft is built on the government’s proposal – this is the hand extended by the President towards the government. Moreover, it is not the first time such a hand has been extended regarding crypto-assets,” added Zbigniew Bogucki.

In his remarks, he argued that it is the government side that is blocking progress toward a compromise on the crypto-assets bill. He added that this is linked to the high-profile zondacrypto case.

“They fear the Zondacrypto case like the devil fears holy water; they want to run forward to avoid being held accountable for their helplessness and lack of action,” said the Head of the Chancellery of the President.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that another government draft law on crypto-assets would be submitted to the Sejm. The President has vetoed two previous bills on this issue. As the head of government stated, the new draft will differ from the twice-vetoed legislation only in that penalties will be tightened for those who commit fraud and “expose the Polish state to risk.”

Today, Finance Minister Andrzej Domański announced that the new government draft has been submitted to the Standing Committee of the Council of Ministers.
