Coffee lovers rejoice! Recent research reveals that indulging in a daily cup of joe can significantly reduce the risk of developing chronic liver diseases, potentially leading to a longer and healthier life.
A study published in BMC Public Health showed a remarkable 21% lower likelihood of chronic liver disease development among regular coffee drinkers. Additionally, they exhibited a 20% reduced risk of developing chronic or fatty liver disease and an impressive 49% lower chance of mortality related to chronic liver conditions compared to non-coffee drinkers.
Similar findings emerged from independent studies conducted in the USA, Mexico, and Portugal, demonstrating a consistent decrease in the risk of metabolic fatty liver disease (formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD), especially in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Domestic data from Poland, as part of the “Coffee and Health” educational program by the National Institute of Public Health National Institute of Hygiene, unequivocally supports the positive impact of coffee. The antioxidants and diterpenes present in coffee improve hepatocyte function, stimulate detoxifying enzymes, and reduce the risk of liver diseases.
While various types of coffee, including decaffeinated and instant, provide liver benefits, it’s crucial to note that most studies focus on black coffee. Adding calorie-rich and sugary extras like milk or flavorings may negate potential heart health benefits, warns the American Heart Association.
As the global death toll from chronic liver diseases increased to 1.3 million from 899,000 between 1990-2017, embracing a daily cup of coffee, in its purest form, emerges as a simple yet effective strategy to safeguard liver health.
