On December 17, Pope Francis approved the recognition of the Ulma Family martyrdom. The family from Poland, Józef and Wiktoria Ulma and their children were killed by the Nazis for trying to save Jews during the Second World War.
According to the Vatican News, on his 86th birthday, Pope Francis authorized the promulgation of Decrees concerning ten servants of God who will soon be beatified, and fourteen holy men and women recognized as Servants of God, who will now be known as “Venerable”, including the Ulma Family.
In 1944, the Nazi police killed eight Jews they found and executed the Ulma Family as a warning to others. They wanted to dissuade Poles from the idea of sheltering Jews.
The Ulma children shared in the operative faith of their parents, while the unborn child in Wiktoria’s womb received a baptism of blood.
