The European Union, including Poland, will be flooded with agricultural products from Mercosur countries. We will face unfair competition and unhealthy food, and on top of that all of this will be contrary to EU law. This is a disaster and a betrayal of farmers by Donald Tusk and Minister Stefan Krajewski – Law and Justice (PiS) MP Janusz Kowalski, former Deputy Minister of Agriculture, tells Niezalezna.pl. The politician comments on the European Commission’s decision announced today regarding the provisional entry into force of the EU-Mercosur agreement starting May 1 this year.
At the end of February, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Commission would begin the provisional application of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement. This became possible after the agreement was ratified by at least one country. At that time, it was approved by the parliament of Uruguay, and subsequently by Argentina. Today it was reported that the provisional agreement will apply from May 1.
“Priorities now include translating the EU-Mercosur agreement into concrete results, providing EU exporters with the platform they need to seize new opportunities in trade, economic growth, and employment,” said EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič.
“Scandal! The European Commission ignores farmers’ protests! The EU-Mercosur agreement will be provisionally applied from May 1! Without a decision by the European Parliament, without waiting for a ruling from the CJEU!” wrote Law and Justice (PiS) MEP Jadwiga Wiśniewska on the X platform.
“The voices of farmers, consumers – as well as the European Parliament, which participates in law-making, have been completely disregarded. The procedure for adopting the agreement is unlawful from start to finish. German interests have prevailed over the EU’s ‘rule of law,’” said Anna Bryłka, an MEP representing Confederation.
“Black date for Polish agriculture”
Niezalezna.pl asked Janusz Kowalski, a Law and Justice (PiS) MP and former Deputy Minister of Agriculture, to comment on the matter.
“This is the defeat of Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Agriculture Minister Stefan Krajewski. May 1 will become a black date for Polish agriculture,” our interlocutor believes.
The European Union, including Poland, will be flooded with agricultural products from Mercosur countries. We will face unfair competition and unhealthy food, and on top of that all of this will be contrary to EU law, he adds.
“Donald Tusk is pursuing German interests by striking at Polish agriculture. In turn, Stefan ‘Mercosur’ Krajewski and the entire PSL have betrayed the Polish countryside. There is no other way to describe it,” he concludes.
