21 November 2023 marked a milestone for Poland’s space sector as Thorium Space S.A. signed a strategic agreement with Swiss company SWISSto12, a leading force in the European Space Agency’s (ESA) HummingSat program. The collaboration will see Thorium Space developing and producing a fully flexible, software-defined payload for the HummingSat geostationary satellite platform. The project is set to span four years, with Thorium Space projected to earn at least €33 million.
This groundbreaking partnership signifies a new era for Poland’s space ambitions, solidifying its role within the broader European telecommunication satellite market.
Key Details of the HummingSat Program
HummingSat, spearheaded by ESA, represents the next generation of geostationary satellites. These compact and cost-effective satellites aim to replace ageing, larger models currently in operation. As part of the program, Thorium Space will deliver a state-of-the-art Ka-band telecommunications payload. The payload will not only power the HummingSat platform but also contribute to Poland’s first geostationary telecommunications satellite, a significant step in advancing national space capabilities.
Advanced Technology and Global Competitiveness
Thorium Space brings cutting-edge technology to the table, including software-defined payloads with digitally steerable antennas. This innovation enables dynamic adaptation of satellite functionalities to operator needs, significantly enhancing operational efficiency and reducing costs.
“This collaboration with SWISSto12 is a landmark achievement for Poland’s space industry,” said Paweł Rymaszewski, CEO of Thorium Space. “Developing a flexible Ka-band payload not only highlights our technological prowess but also paves the way for Poland’s geostationary satellite, an essential component of the European space landscape.”
Strengthening European Cooperation
The HummingSat program exemplifies Europe’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration in the space sector. With their compact designs and reduced costs, HummingSat satellites offer a competitive alternative to larger systems produced by global giants like Airbus and Thales. Supported by ESA, the project underscores Europe’s drive for technological independence and its ability to deliver solutions tailored to global market demands.
The Path to a Polish Geostationary Satellite
A central outcome of the partnership between Thorium Space and SWISSto12 will be the creation of Poland’s geostationary telecommunications satellite. Partially funded through Poland’s ESA membership contributions, this project positions the nation among Europe’s key players in space technology.
“Our cooperation with ESA and SWISSto12 demonstrates that the European space sector offers viable alternatives to traditional approaches,” added Rymaszewski. “Through initiatives like HummingSat, we are building innovative technologies in Europe that meet the highest standards and adapt to contemporary needs.”
A New Frontier for Thorium Space
With this strategic agreement, Thorium Space cements its role as a leader in technological innovation, blending cutting-edge solutions with practical applications for the global space market. The company’s involvement in the HummingSat program not only advances its standing in Europe but also showcases its potential to shape the future of satellite technology worldwide.
