Today Poland unites with Ukraine in commemorating the victims of the Great Famine

Every year, on the fourth Saturday of November, Ukraine and the world commemorate millions of victims of the Holodomor. The Soviet-made famine Holodomor in 1932-33 claimed the lives of 4 to 7mln Ukrainians.

The Holodomor, derived from морити голодом, moryty holodom, ‘to kill by starvation’), also known as the Terror-Famine or the Great Famine, was a man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine from 1932 to 1933 that killed millions of Ukrainians. The Holodomor was part of the wider Soviet famine of 1932–1933 which affected the major grain-producing areas of the country.

On 16 March 2006, the Senate of the Republic of Poland paid tribute to the victims of the Great Famine and declared it an act of genocide, expressing solidarity with the Ukrainian nation and its efforts to commemorate this crime. Also, on 22 January 2015, a Holodomor monument was erected in the city of Lublin.
