Tragedy in the High Tatras: Polish Tourist Dies After Fall

A tragic accident occurred yesterday evening in the Slovak part of the High Tatras, resulting in the death of a Polish tourist. The woman, climbing with her partner near Pośrednia Grań, fell from a height and succumbed to her injuries.

According to Slovakia’s Mountain Rescue Service (Horská záchranná služba, HZS), the woman slipped down one of the gullies into the Staroleśna Valley. Her partner, stranded on a ledge without the necessary equipment, was unable to assist her. He alerted Polish mountain rescue services, who passed the information to their Slovak counterparts.

Rescue teams from Stary Smokovec quickly arrived at the scene but were unable to save the woman. They then focused on evacuating her partner, using specialized equipment to transport him safely to Stary Smokovec. The woman’s body was handed over to the Slovak police.

This tragedy marks yet another fatal accident in the High Tatras, a reminder of the dangers these beautiful but demanding mountains pose to climbers and hikers without proper preparation.
