In a surprising statement on Thursday in Washington, the U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his interest in annexing Greenland to the United States. During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump emphasized that the incorporation of Greenland could significantly contribute to international security.
“I think it will happen,” Trump responded when asked directly about his plans to annex Greenland. He further expressed optimism about potential assistance from Rutte, highlighting, “I’m sitting here with a man who could be very helpful. You know, Mark, we need it for international security, not just for our own security.”
Rutte, however, refrained from directly engaging in the discussion about Greenland’s annexation but emphasized the growing strategic importance of the Arctic region. He pointed out the increased interest from Russia and China, indicating that the area is becoming crucial for NATO’s security interests.
Trump’s remarks revive previous speculation and controversy surrounding his Greenland proposal, first floated publicly during his presidency, reflecting ongoing geopolitical concerns about the Arctic.
