Tusk Announces a Name Change for Central Communication Port (CPK). But He Forgot That… It Is Impossible

Port Polska” – this, according to Donald Tusk, is what CPK is now supposed to be called. Under the law, however, introducing such a change is impossible. This results from the fact that the name of the investment is precisely defined in the 2018 act. “If they want to call it ‘Port Polska’ instead of CPK, it will only make it easier to distinguish what they have done with the CPK Programme from what was originally intended, and the real CPK will return anyway,” commented Michał Czarnik, vice-president of the Tak dla CPK Association.

Tusk Claims He Is Changing the Name of CPK

Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced during today’s press conference that the Central Communication Port (CPK) will now bear a different name. In doing so, he attacked PiS politicians, who allegedly “disgraced” the previous name.

“We will no longer use the name that our predecessors disgraced. I do not want those bad associations, those disastrous facts connected with this investment, to follow us also in the symbolic dimension,” said the head of government. He then added that “this is probably the right moment to solemnly announce today that the airport, the largest airport in this part of Europe, the hub, the shopping centre – that this great undertaking should be called Port Polska.”

“There Will Be No Name Change for CPK”

Michał Czarnik, vice-president of the Tak dla CPK Association, pointed out, however, that Donald Tusk has no authority to change the name of CPK. It is written directly into the statute. “There will be no name change for CPK. It follows from the provisions of the binding act, which Donald Tusk is unable to change. And if they want to call it ‘Port Polska’ instead of CPK, it will only make it easier to distinguish what they have done with the CPK Programme from what was originally intended. And the real CPK will return anyway…” we read in his post.

He attached an excerpt from the Act of 10 May 2018 on CPK, which states in Article 1, among other things:

"This Act defines the rules and procedures for:
1. managing the preparation and implementation of investments related to the Central Communication Port, hereinafter referred to as 'CPK', the Accompanying Investments, and other undertakings related to the construction of CPK."
