Tusk on his interview with the “FT”. First he mocked the opposition, and then… spoke about an “uncertain reaction of allies”

Donald Tusk was asked in the Sejm about the interview he gave to Financial Times. He first mocked the opposition, which “failed to understand his words” because the interview was in English, and then… once again questioned the loyalty of Poland’s key ally, the United States. “It is high time – and I want to stress this very strongly – to keep our eyes wide open and not to risk an uncertain reaction from our allies if something were to happen,” he said.

In a Friday interview with one of the largest Western newspapers – Financial Times – Donald Tusk, head of the Polish government, questioned the “loyalty” of Poland’s most important ally – the United States. At the same time, he called for “strengthening the EU’s mutual defence clause”. Tusk told the newspaper that “the biggest and most important question for Europe is whether the United States is ready to be as loyal as described in our treaties (NATO)”. Moreover, he assessed that a potential Russian attack could occur within a few months.

Tusk explains his interview – and again targets the United States

“Where did you get the information that Russian aggression is planned within a few months?” – Donald Tusk was asked today by journalists in the Sejm.

His response was surprising, as it began with an attack on the opposition, which – according to Tusk – may not have understood his words because the interview was published in English. However, this was followed by criticism directed at Poland’s ally – the United States.

“Not everyone, especially those commenting from the right, may have had the opportunity to read this interview in the Financial Times. It was in English, so perhaps those commenting the loudest had some difficulty understanding what I said there,” Tusk said evasively.

He continued: “However, information about possible provocations and the threat of various forms of aggression by Russia against the Baltic states or other NATO countries has been available for quite some time – not only to me, but also to the president, our services and allied services. Unfortunately, this is no revelation, in the sense that yes – for a long time we have been receiving signals that the Russians are preparing for possible actions or provocations. It is high time – and I want to stress this very strongly – to keep our eyes wide open and not to risk an uncertain reaction from our allies if something were to happen.”

“I have spoken about this openly before and I will repeat it with full awareness that it may be unpopular in some circles. The reaction of some allies to what happened on September 10 in our airspace – I am referring to the Russian drone provocation – those ambiguities suggesting it might have been an accident, perhaps Ukrainian. And I am talking here about the most important ally. This cannot be repeated in a situation involving serious actions. That is why I will do everything to mobilise both our European allies and our American ally to act whenever a threat emerges. That was my intention, based unfortunately on real information,” he concluded.
