TVP in (apparent) liquidation. National Broadcasting Council notifies the prosecutor’s office

“Placing public media in liquidation creates the impression of a merely apparent action. (…) The Polish state cannot accept a situation in which key entities operate under conditions that raise doubts as to the legality of their actions,” said the head of the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT), Agnieszka Glapiak.

In a statement issued today, Glapiak announced that she is submitting a notification to the prosecutor’s office regarding individuals responsible for media companies in liquidation.

“I have decided to file a notification with the prosecutor’s office to examine whether the individuals responsible for managing the companies in liquidation – Telewizja Polska, Polish Radio, and the Regional Stations of Polish Radio – are in fact performing their duties or merely maintaining an apparent state of affairs. The prosecutor’s office should also clarify whether there has been a violation of the constitutional order of the state and unlawful interference in the actions of a constitutional body, namely the National Broadcasting Council (KRRiT),” said the head of the Council.

In her view, the liquidation status of public media creates the impression of an “apparent action”.

“The liquidation process has caused irreparable financial, organisational, and reputational losses. Public media have lost hundreds of thousands of viewers and listeners. The Polish state cannot accept a situation in which key entities operate under conditions that raise doubts as to the legality of their actions,” wrote Agnieszka Glapiak.

She expressed the expectation that the prosecutor’s office will thoroughly clarify the conduct of the liquidation process in public media. In April 2024, the court, after numerous attempts, recognised the liquidation status of public media in Poland.
