Ukrainian Services Arrested a Double Agent of Special Services. He Operated Near the Polish Border

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) detained a military instructor who, on the orders of Russian special services, was preparing attacks on Ukrainian military commanders at a training ground near Yavoriv in the Lviv region, right next to the border with Poland.

“The SBU detained a ‘double’ agent of the Russian Federation, whose task was to eliminate commanders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the Yavoriv training ground,” the SBU said in a statement on Monday.

It was explained that the agent worked simultaneously for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and Russian military intelligence (GRU).

“His task from the GRU was to prepare terrorist attacks against commanders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine who, along with their units, were undergoing combat training at the local defense forces training center,” the statement said.

In May 2024, a 73-year-old man from the Lviv region in western Ukraine was sentenced to 15 years in prison for coordinating a Russian missile strike on the Yavoriv training ground in March 2022. As a result of the attack, over 60 people were killed, and more than 160 were injured.

Russian forces, which shelled the International Peacekeeping and Security Center in Yavoriv (better known as the Yavoriv training ground) on March 13, 2022, used over 30 missiles in the attack, according to the Interfax-Ukraine news agency at the time.

The training ground is located less than 40 km from Lviv and about 20 km from the Polish border.
