Exhibitions Featuring Viking Treasures
The Archaeological and Historical Museum in Elbląg unveils two exhibitions dedicated to Viking treasures. Visitors can explore silver coins discovered in Janów Pomorski, the site of the Viking trading port Truso. The exhibitions, titled “Gold of the Vikings: Treasures and Politics Since 1800” and “Silver of the Vikings: The Truso Coin Hoard,” run from January 17 to March 11 in the historic Elbląg Gymnasium building.
The Truso Coin Hoard
Unearthed in 1986, the Truso hoard comprises 11 complete coins and five fragments, primarily Abbasid dirhams and a rare Sasanian drachma. The coins, hidden in the early 9th century, reflect Viking trade routes that connected Scandinavia with Constantinople and the Middle East. The exhibit highlights the cultural and spiritual practices surrounding the concealment of treasures.
Politics of Viking Gold
A touring exhibition explores two renowned Viking finds: Norway’s Hoen hoard and the Hiddensee jewelry from Germany. It examines how these artifacts became entwined with politics, wars, and debates over cultural heritage.
