Trzaskowski’s “Polish Pride” Snafu: German Cucumbers and American Wafers Touted as Homegrown

It hasn’t been a good week for Civic Platform (Platforma Obywatelska). Capping off a series of slip-ups, Rafał Trzaskowski contributed his own blunder. While on the campaign trail urging economic patriotism, he demonstrated exactly how not to go about it. In promoting supposed “famous Polish products,” he showcased German cucumbers and American wafers.

Cucumbers from Donald’s House?

During a meeting in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, Rafał Trzaskowski shared an anecdote about finding Polish cucumbers on store shelves in Mongolia, saying they “need to be promoted worldwide.” Later, the KO (Civic Coalition) candidate pulled out some chocolate sweets produced in Lublin, said to be quite popular in Azerbaijan.

The issue? The cucumbers Trzaskowski was championing—made by Bracia Urbanek Sp. z o.o.—are actually produced in Germany!
Michał Woś, an MP from Law and Justice (PiS), quickly pointed this out. “Trzaskowski’s cucumbers (allegedly a Polish enterprise) are from Germany…” he wrote on Facebook.

Perhaps it wasn’t Trzaskowski’s fault—he might have received the jar from Donald Tusk, for instance. But it wasn’t his only embarrassment of the day. In fact, every move seemed to go awry.

Missed the Mark with Wafers, Too…

The “Prince Polo” wafers, hailed by Trzaskowski as a Polish hit in Azerbaijan, are a product of the American company Mondelez International. Granted, they were once a Polish brand—but only until 1993.

Little did he know what the truth really was…
