A warehouse fire in Gdańsk’s Nowy Port prompts authorities to restrict beach access due to potential water contamination. Firefighting efforts continue as safety measures are implemented.
A warehouse fire in the Nowy Port district of Gdańsk has been contained, with firefighters currently engaged in extinguishing the remaining flames. The State Fire Service reported the successful localization of the fire on social media, noting that the blaze was identified around 2:00 AM and the situation is now under control.
The fire, which broke out on Sunday afternoon at a warehouse on Oliwska Street, involved an area of approximately 400 square meters. The blaze resulted in the partial collapse of the warehouse’s roof and affected a total area of about 6,500 square meters. However, firefighters managed to protect the other section of the warehouse and an adjacent office building from the flames.
The firefighting operation involved a substantial response, with 46 fire service units, three boats from the Marine Fire Service, and a vessel from the Maritime Search and Rescue Service deployed to the scene. High-ranking officials, including the deputy commanders of the State Fire Service (PSP) and an operational group from the PSP headquarters, are also on-site. Additionally, a command post from the regional PSP headquarters in Gdańsk is actively coordinating the efforts.
In response to the fire, the Government Center for Security (RCB) issued an alert to Gdańsk residents, advising them to avoid using the beach in Gdańsk-Brzeźno due to possible water contamination resulting from the fire. On Sunday evening, the RCB also sent out alerts instructing residents to close their windows and stay at least 500 meters away from the fire to ensure their safety.
To mitigate environmental impacts, firefighters deployed a sorption barrier on the port channel overnight. This measure aims to prevent potential pollutants from spreading into the water.
As the firefighting efforts continue, authorities are urging residents to heed safety warnings and avoid the affected areas until further notice. The comprehensive response from emergency services highlights the seriousness of the situation and the ongoing commitment to ensuring public safety.
