Warsaw and other parts of Poland are facing significant challenges after a night of record-breaking rainfall led to severe flooding and widespread traffic disruptions. The downpour, which began on Monday and continued through Tuesday, has particularly impacted the Mazowsze region, including the capital.
In some areas of Warsaw, rainfall reached unprecedented levels. The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) reported that nearly 120 litres of rain per square meter fell in Bielany within 24 hours, with over 90 litres recorded at Okęcie. The intense rainfall caused streets to flood, leading to major traffic disruptions throughout the city.
The S8 expressway, a vital thoroughfare in Warsaw, has been closed in several sections due to flooding. Key stretches, including the segment from Połczyńska Street towards Białystok and from Marki towards Poznań, are entirely blocked. Additionally, the S2 expressway near Warsaw Airport has been rendered impassable by a large water accumulation between the Puławska and Warsaw Okęcie junctions, disrupting traffic heading toward Terespol.

In response to the emergency, Warsaw’s police commander has declared a state of alert for the city’s police forces. Officers have been dispatched to manage the chaotic traffic conditions, directing vehicles to alternative routes and strongly advising drivers to leave their cars at home. The public has been urged to use public transportation, though the city’s transit system is also experiencing delays and issues due to the flooding.
Residents in buildings with underground garages have been advised to move their vehicles to higher ground as rising water levels continue to pose a threat.
