Wąsik and Kamiński Targeted by Prosecutors: “This is Absurd, a Political Operation”

Law and Justice (PiS) Members of the European Parliament, Maciej Wąsik and Mariusz Kamiński, have been summoned by the public prosecutor’s office to “supplement the charges” against them. Both refused to participate in the proceedings and declined to sign any documents.

On December 20, 2023, the District Court in Warsaw issued a final and binding judgment sentencing Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik—former heads of the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau (CBA)—to two years in prison for abuse of power in the so-called 2007 “land scandal,” despite the fact that they had previously been pardoned by the President of the Republic of Poland.

In response to the final judgment, the Speaker of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, issued a decision declaring the parliamentary mandates of both PiS politicians expired. Both Kamiński and Wąsik appealed this decision, and the Chamber of Extraordinary Review and Public Affairs of the Supreme Court ruled that they remain members of parliament.

The prosecution now alleges that the politicians failed to comply with the final court ruling, which banned them from holding public office, and that they continued to perform parliamentary duties at the end of December 2023.

Following their summons to the prosecutor’s office, the PiS MEPs announced that Prosecutor Artur Wańdoch had modified the charges. According to Mariusz Kamiński, the original charges involved two offenses—voting in the Sejm and participating in a committee meeting—but have now been consolidated into a single count.

“We refused to take part in the proceedings or to sign any documents. We submitted written statements. I declared that I consider today’s action to be unlawful,” Kamiński stated.

Maciej Wąsik expressed a similar view, showing a text message from the Chancellery of the Sejm inviting him to a committee meeting—the very meeting for which he is now facing charges. “This is absurd. It’s a political operation,” he said.
