“We can’t afford it.” Kidawa-Błońska speaks frankly about one of Tusk’s “100 specifics”

Donald Tusk’s party entered the 2023 elections convincing Poles that if it managed to take power, within the first 100 days of its rule the tax-free allowance would increase to 60,000 złoty. Soon it will be two years since the December 13 Coalition came to power, and one of the 100 specifics still remains unfulfilled. “We can’t afford it,” said Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska today, explaining why the promise has not been kept.

A 60,000 złoty tax-free allowance – an unfulfilled Civic Coalition (KO) promise

Before the 2023 parliamentary elections, the Civic Coalition announced that within the first 100 days of its government it would raise the tax-free allowance to 60,000 złoty. It was one of the “100 specifics.” Meanwhile, last year the government adopted the Medium-Term Budgetary and Structural Plan for 2025–2028, which clearly states that no increase in this allowance is foreseen in the coming years.

The Marshal of the Senate, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, was asked today on Radio ZET about the chances of fulfilling this flagship promise that Tusk’s party made when it went into the elections two years ago.

“When will the government introduce a 60,000 złoty tax-free allowance? It’s long past 100 days. Please don’t hide behind the ridiculous excuse of increased defense spending. Give us something concrete,” said a listener’s question.

The Marshal, however, had no good news. She stated that “right now our budget cannot afford to introduce this allowance, adding that Finance Minister Andrzej Domański had said this many times.

When asked whether it would definitely not happen in 2026, she replied, No. We can’t afford it. Work on the budget is ongoing. It’s a very ambitious budget, but we really have to calculate our funds very carefully.
