What’s Next for von der Leyen? The European Parliament Has Made Its Decision

At noon today, the European Parliament in Strasbourg voted against a motion of no confidence in the European Commission, which is led by Ursula von der Leyen.

What’s next for von der Leyen?

As a reminder, Romania’s AUR party is part of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the European Parliament. This group also includes MEPs from Poland’s Law and Justice (PiS) party, most of whom supported the motion by signing it.

Signatures were also collected from MEPs belonging to other political groups in the European Parliament — including Patriots for Europe, Europe of Sovereign Nations, and several non-affiliated members. According to the Polish Press Agency, MEPs from Italy’s Brothers of Italy party, who are also part of the ECR, voted against the motion.

How the vote went

In the vote, 175 MEPs supported the motion, 360 voted against, and 18 abstained.

For the motion to pass, it would have required a two-thirds majority of votes cast, representing at the same time a majority of the Parliament’s total members.
