‘Where the f**kups are…’: How Tusk and Giertych Categorized Voters

Roman Giertych complained to Donald Tusk about being “pissed off” with Grzegorz Schetyna because the former Civic Platform (PO) leader had offered him unattractive constituencies for the Senate elections. In their conversation, both the lawyer and the current Prime Minister disparagingly referred to the residents of Eastern Greater Poland and Radom.

TV Republika today released recordings that could shake the political scene. The published excerpt of a conversation involving Roman Giertych and Donald Tusk dates back to 2019. One of the topics was Giertych’s conflict with Grzegorz Schetyna, then leader of PO. The discussion includes particularly vulgar comments about residents of Eastern Greater Poland and Radom.

Roman Giertych (R.G.): “I think that was his game. I’m relieved he didn’t offer me a spot for the Sejm. But I’m pissed off he didn’t put me in the Senate race. If he’d offered me Poznań, I’d have been satisfied. But, you know, that would have severely impacted my business. Couldn’t help it. I wanted it, but they didn’t want me—what can you do? Couldn’t go into a trap, you know, some district where I’d just burn myself.”

Donald Tusk (D.T.): “That’s completely pointless.”

R.G.: “But he offered me five districts, and I would’ve lost in every one. Five districts! He spent an hour and a half hammering me to agree. I kept refusing—won’t do this, won’t do that. He had prepared options, hoping one would tempt me, assuming I hadn’t checked everything thoroughly. Those five districts—somewhere in Eastern Greater Poland, Radom—all shi*ty ones, you know.

D.T.: “Where the f**kups are.”

R.G.: “You know, the closest to an equal fight was in that Warsaw suburbs ring, the northern one, but still slim chances. Especially since if I entered, the Left Together (Lewica Razem) or someone else would surely put up a candidate. I couldn’t take any risky moves. They’d later say I’m the reason we don’t have a Senate majority.”

D.T.: “Yeah, that’s how it goes.”

R.G.: “So, listen, I took it hard, Donald.”

D.T.: “I know.”

R.G.: “Because he broke his word in a way I didn’t expect. These are the stories that…”

D.T.: “Only memories remain.”

R.G.: “But you warned me, I have to admit, you did tell me.”

D.T.: “I always told you.”

R.G.: “But I didn’t think he’d… It’s bothering him.”

D.T.: “As an old man, let me tell you…”

R.G.: “You’re not old, you’re younger in spirit than many older people around you.”

D.T.: “Experience in these matters is particularly valuable.”

R.G.: “I was brutally honest with him. You know, since we were both upset at the end, I was very blunt. On Monday, before his decision, I told him the campaign was going badly, that his advisors were deceiving him, and nothing indicated it was going in the right direction. Simply put, action was needed.”
