“You can see Tusk’s nervousness. He knows that if President Nawrocki vetoes SAFE, the gentlemen from Germany will call him onto the carpet and shout at him,” assessed Law and Justice (PiS) MEP Patryk Jaki. The politician was commenting on a video posted by Donald Tusk, in which the prime minister, addressing the president, said: “Mr. President, please sign SAFE immediately.”
Tusk pressures the president to sign the SAFE bill
On Wednesday, President Karol Nawrocki announced an alternative to the SAFE program. The proposal, called “Polish Safe 0%,” would make it possible to finance military armaments without taking out loans from European Union institutions.
However, the proposal has been strongly criticized by politicians from the December 13 coalition. Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently published a video in which he appealed to the president to sign the SAFE legislation.
“Mr. President, please sign SAFE immediately. There is no time for maneuvering. Poland, Polish companies, the employees of these companies, and Poland’s security are waiting for this money from the SAFE program,” the prime minister said.
He also added that the funds from SAFE are supposedly “on the table,” and that factories are preparing to produce military equipment that will be contracted.
Jaki: Fear is already speaking through Tusk
Patryk Jaki, an MEP from Law and Justice (PiS), responded to Tusk’s remarks in a video posted on social media.
“Let’s say it directly – fear is already speaking through Tusk. Why? Because the Germans will not be satisfied. The German chancellor has just gone to Trump and promises to buy American equipment, while suggesting: ‘You can no longer count on the Poles, who want to use SAFE to buy European equipment instead of American equipment,’” he said.
The politician emphasized that “Germany orders its party in Poland to attack the United States, while at the same time they themselves have carried out a reset with America at our expense – this is basic knowledge for anyone capable of using reason.”
“And in Tusk’s new clip we have two minutes about how Poland needs military equipment, which nobody disputes, but not a word about why Poles should take a SAFE loan instead of the cheaper loan for Nawrocki’s Polish 0% program. And above all, nothing about the conditionality that means SAFE funds will be blocked as soon as power changes in Poland. Those from Nawrocki’s 0% program will not be. What’s more, besides investing in Polish factories, we will also be able to buy American equipment,” he reminded.
In his opinion, “you can see Tusk’s nervousness, because he knows that if Nawrocki vetoes SAFE, the gentlemen from Germany will call him onto the carpet and shout at him, because it will ruin their plan to obtain concessions from the United States for Europe at Poland’s expense.”
“Moreover, Tusk will no longer be able to blackmail Poles during the campaign by threatening to block funds if they do not elect Civic Platform (PO) – exactly as they did in 2023. So Tusk’s entire plan is kaput,” he concluded.
