Yes, Kamesznica lies administratively within Milówka. The choice of this location was influenced, among other things, by the fact that many members of the unit came from these areas—from Węgierska Górka, Żywiec, and Milówka itself. A large number of soldiers also originated from Czechowice-Dziedzice, or from the other side of Barania Góra, from the Wisła area. So we can say that they are finally returning to their home region.
And Henryk Flame himself?
He rests in a family grave at the cemetery in Czechowice-Dziedzice, where he was buried immediately after being murdered by a militia officer in 1947 in Zabrzeg. In Kamesznica, there will be his symbolic grave. I should add that some of the graves in this section will contain the remains that have been found and identified. A number will hold unidentified remains, while another part will consist solely of symbolic tombstones. There is also a group of soldiers whose remains were found, but whose families strongly wished to bury them in their own family graves. The names of these individuals will also appear on the symbolic graves. I trust that the entire cemetery will express, in the best possible way, the gratitude of the Polish state and restore the honor due to each of the fallen.
Cemetery project
In 2018, the Katowice branch of the Institute of National Remembrance’s Office for Commemoration of Struggle and Martyrdom was tasked with the preliminary selection of a burial site for the remains of soldiers of the National Armed Forces from the unit of Henryk Flame, nom de guerre “Bartek.” On October 26, 2022, a press briefing was held by the then President of the Institute of National Remembrance, Dr. Karol Nawrocki, presenting the project and announcing the start of the construction process.
“Preparations are currently underway for the ceremonial funeral and consecration of the cemetery in Kamesznica, which will become the first necropolis of the soldiers of the National Armed Forces. We will inform about the set date of the event well in advance. It would be an honor for us if the President of the Republic of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, were to take part in this ceremony,” said Dr. Rafał Kościański, spokesperson for the Institute of National Remembrance, in an interview with niezalezna.pl.
