On Sunday, April 13 at noon, a special commemorative event will take place in front of the Presidential Palace in Warsaw (on Krakowskie Przedmieście) in honour of the late Maria Kaczyńska. All are invited to lay yellow tulips— the favourite flowers of the late First Lady.
On April 13, 2010, when the body of Maria Kaczyńska was brought back to Poland, crowds of Poles gathered on Krakowskie Przedmieście in Warsaw carrying yellow tulips, the First Lady’s favourite flowers. In this way, they paid tribute to her, and the entire route of the hearse was lined with these blooms.
Thus, a beautiful tradition was born. Unfortunately, in 2011, when people once again laid yellow flowers in front of the Presidential Palace, the municipal police and other security services began removing them almost immediately. This “arrest of the tulips” became an infamous episode. As a result, people have continued to bring them every year, exactly on April 13.
