Since the coalition took power, it has continuously attacked TV Republika and made the work of its journalists more difficult. But that’s not all. Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski announced in one of his television interviews that the station would face consequences, potentially including the revocation of its broadcasting license.
Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki discussed the attempt to silence the “House of Free Speech” in a conversation with editor Danuta Holecka.
“I talked about it in the United States, and we have to make a big, big deal out of it, because gagging free media is something Americans understand perfectly well,”
Morawiecki stated
He also recalled the recent speech by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance in Munich.
“He spoke about free speech, about the fact that you must not gag anyone, and that this is the foundation—something that lies beneath all political battles. […] These are our values: freedom, freedom of conscience, freedom of expression. […] That’s why what I told them—how they want to strike at you, take away your license, how Gawkowski (Tusk’s deputy) threatens to shut down platform X and shut down Facebook—found a receptive audience [in the U.S. – ed. note]. I must say everyone was all ears,” the former Prime Minister recounted and then declared:
“If necessary, I will go there, and I will tell everyone—wherever I have to—that you are under attack, that you are being murdered by this government.”
Morawiecki is convinced that by shutting down Telewizja Republika, the government seeks to “close the system.”
In order for free media to survive, support from viewers and readers is crucial.
