100th Anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. President Nawrocki: “We are free, independent, and sovereign”

“We are free, independent, and sovereign. We stand here aware of what freedom and sovereignty truly mean,” said President of the Republic of Poland Karol Nawrocki during the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Today in Warsaw, solemn celebrations are being held to mark the 100th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

President: This is our mirror…

Among those who gave speeches was President Karol Nawrocki.

“We are free, independent, and sovereign. We stand here aware of what freedom and sovereignty truly mean. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is the altar of our Homeland, but also our mirror, in which we must see that we are a free nation despite everything,” he said.

He continued: “But it is also a mirror that tells us, the people of today, what we must do with our freedom – how to ensure that in the coming decades no new plaques of battles or new unknown and known soldiers appear on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” The President emphasized that this is a task for himself, but also for our government.

On 2 November 1925, the remains of an unidentified soldier, chosen by Jadwiga Zarugiewiczowa and brought from the Cemetery of the Lwów Eaglets – soldiers who died defending the city during the Polish-Ukrainian War over Lwów and Eastern Galicia, as well as the Polish-Bolshevik War – were laid to rest in the tomb. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and Piłsudski Square are among the most important sites where national state ceremonies are held.
