In Warsaw, there was the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Battle of the Niemen River

The Battle of the Niemen River, hidden in the shadow of the Battle of Warsaw, is one of the most significant battles in the Polish history – wrote Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki to the participants of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the battle.

The celebrations started with the Polish national anthem performance and the honourable shift change by the tomb of the Unknown Soldier on the Pilsudski Square in Warsaw. The organizer of the celebrations was the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression.

‘100 years ago in the significant Battle of the Niemen River, we repelled the Bolshevik onslaught. This battle, hidden in the shadow of the Battle of Warsaw, is one of the most significant battles in Polish history. Today, on the Pilsudski Square, we pay tribute to our victorious soldiers’ – wrote Prime Minister Morawiecki.

He pointed out that the ‘breakdown of the Bolshevik army was a Polish triumph on a global scale, the first after the Vienna succour’. He also reminded that in the Battle of Niemen River and subsequent pursuit of the Polish army, Bolshevik’s army incurred losses.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed that not only the events in Warsaw but also by the Niemen River decided about Europe’s fate. ‘We, the citizens of the free and sovereign Poland, pay tribute to the courage and bravery of our ancestors. Glory to the Heroes’ – wrote Morawiecki.
