Twenty years ago, on May 1, 2004, Poland, along with Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Hungary, joined the European Union. This historic event marked the largest enlargement in the history of the European Union, bringing together ten countries from Central and Eastern Europe. The accession of these nations not only expanded the geographical boundaries of the EU but also symbolized the end of the Cold War era and the reunification of Europe after decades of division.

The accession process was a transformative journey for the new member states, as they underwent comprehensive reforms to align their legal, economic, and political systems with EU standards. This period of transition aimed to strengthen democracy, promote human rights, and foster economic development. Joining the EU opened up new opportunities for these countries, allowing them to participate in the single market, benefit from cohesion funds, and engage in closer cooperation on various policy areas, from environmental protection to security.

Over the past two decades, the EU has evolved, facing both challenges and successes. The enlargement of 2004 contributed to the Union’s diversity and enriched its cultural tapestry. It also highlighted the EU’s commitment to fostering stability, peace, and prosperity across the continent. As the member states celebrate this significant milestone, they continue to work together to address shared challenges, demonstrating the enduring strength of the European project.
