“Re-reading Norwid. Dramas” – from Tuesday

The series is designed to look at various shades of Norwid’s theater and drama, said Theater Institute’s Deputy IT Director Jarosław Cymerman about the series of performative readings “Re-reading Norwid. Dramas” at the Theater Institute in Warsaw. First reading – on Tuesday.

Cyprian Kamil Norwid was a 19th-century Polish poet, prose writer, playwright, essayist, graphic artist, sculptor, painter, and philosopher. Often considered one of the most important Polish romantic poets.

“This entire series of readings has been planned with Prof. Karol Samsel from the University of Warsaw. During it, we want to read a few dramatic texts by Norwid and +Promethidion +, which is not a drama, but is important for Norwid,” explained Dr. Jarosław Cymerman.

“The series is designed to look at various shades of Norwid’s theater and drama; how he designed both mysteries and a renewed form of high comedy, which he called +white tragedy +. Hence our selection of works. This list is not chronological. It is rather an attempt to take a closer look at the examples of theater-thinking by Norwid,” explained the Deputy IT Director.

“In the final, we want to try to reconstruct the idea of Norwid’s theater by referring to his text +Za kulisami+ (Backstage),” he noted.

Cymerman recalled that the reading series at the Institute was organized on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Cyprian Kamil Norwid’s birth.
