    International Day of Democracy

Democracy is a universal value based on the freedom to decide on the shape of political, economic, and social systems – this is the message of the holiday proclaimed by the United Nations.

International Day of Democracy is an opportunity to draw the world’s attention to the work being done by the United Nations to support countries’ efforts to promote and develop democracy. These actions are carried out under the UN Charter and only at the request of the State concerned.

International Day of Democracy was established by a resolution of the United Nations Secretary-General in 2007. The document called on governments around the world to strengthen national programs for the promotion and consolidation of democracy.
