“My brother a fisherman” film nominated to Short Film Competition during the 46th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia

On 20.09.2021, the 46th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia began. During this prestigious event, the Short Film Competition is planned.

One of the films is the short film “My brother a fisherman” directed by Alicja Sokół. It is one of the newest films from the Warsaw Film School and the film will begin its festival adventure with the premiere in Gdynia at the most important Polish festival. A film by a student at the Warsaw Film School tells the story of two brothers who, in difficult circumstances, try to find a common language.

Somewhere at the end of the world, in a small fishing village, live two brothers who are completely different from each other. While the older one devotes himself to work, the younger one listens every day on the radio to a competition show that could change his life for the better. When their father disappears one day, the brothers must grow closer by taking over his duties at the fishing port together.

    – “I wanted such a simple story about what someone wants and what they really get from life,” said Alicja Sokół, the director of My Brother a Fisherman in an interview with Kaja Klimek.

According to the director, the inspiration for the films came while staying in her hometown.

     – “Because of the pandemic, I had to return to our hometown for a while.  It brought back some high school times and I was travelling with my friends and the boys around the Vistula Lagoon and simply, somewhere there, at some point, it all came together that these were my heroes and I also knew that the boys had a great sensitivity to art, Emil takes pictures, Bartek too.  (…) I’m glad about my intuition that I trusted the guys and it’s cool that it worked out that way.”  – Alicja said.

Asked about the script and the fact whether it was consulted with the actors or improvised, Alicja replied that the script was inspired by the Vistula lagoon area and was created especially for the two amateur roles

     – “It was this nature and unspoiled landscapes, undiscovered by many people so far, that influenced me and somewhere this story was created. I wrote a story about two brothers, and actually, when it comes to script issues there are a couple of stages. The first one is what I wrote for myself. The second was when I saw those characters in Bartek and Emil. The third one is what we created together and the set, because the guys also had a very big influence on the lyrics and the story in general.” – she said
