There are charges for cutting down the cross. The 31-year-old faces 5 years in prison

Charges of insulting religious feelings and destroying property as a result of a hooligan act were heard today in the prosecutor’s office by a 31-year-old man suspected of devastating a wooden roadside cross in Zielona Góra, according to Marcin Maludy, a spokesman for the Lubuskie police.

“According to the charges filed, the man faces up to five years in prison. The maximum sentence, in this case, stems from a charge related to property damage,” Maludy said.

A cut-down roadside cross on Spawaczy Street in the Zastalowskie housing estate was noticed on Monday afternoon by residents who informed their parish about it. The matter was also reported to the police, who began searching for the vandal.

It turned out that the perpetrator had posted a video on his social media profile showing him cutting down the cross. The man was detained on Tuesday evening in a flat he was renting in Zielona Góra.

“On his profile, the 31-year-old urged others to join the action of cutting down roadside crosses,” the spokesman added.
