Renovation of the Stare Powązki cemetery

The PGE Foundation supported the production of replicas of gas lanterns at the Stare Powązki cemetery in Warsaw. The lanterns will be made according to the pattern from 1856.

“The donation from the PGE Foundation will be used to replace lighting in Stare Powązki. The project will be carried out as part of renovation and restoration works in the oldest and most historically and artistically valuable part of the cemetery. They will consist in arranging new stone surfaces with their lighting, and making lanterns that will resemble those on the streets of 19th-century Warsaw,” said Wojciech Dąbrowski, President of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna (Polish Energy Group).

“Our main goal is to preserve the material cultural heritage to the maximum, through the conservation and renovation of monuments in the cemetery, as well as the modernization of the infrastructure in such a way as to preserve the historical character of the necropolis,” says Karol Gądzik, board member of the Stare Powązki Foundation.

Also, in the area of education, the Stare Powązki Foundation together with the PGE Foundation have undertaken joint activities aimed at showing, through the prism of people buried in Stare Powązki, the history of not only the capital but also the entire country.
