On March 18, the 42nd anniversary of Tamara Łempicka’s death, the National Museum in Lublin will open an exhibition entirely devoted to the artist: “Tamara Łempicka. A Woman in Travel.” This will be the first monographic presentation in Poland of the works of this world-renowned painter.
Tamara Łempicka became an icon of her time. In the 1920s and 1930s, she created her artistic language, still recognizable today, which made her famous and gained worldwide recognition. The exhibition will feature paintings from Polish public and private collections and museums located in France, including Centre Pompidou, MUDO Museum, André Malraux Museum of Modern Art and Nantes Museum of Fine Arts.
Tamara Łempicka (1898-1980), known as the Baroness with a brush, created an image of a modern and independent successful woman, thanks to which she became an icon of her time, and her name became recognizable both in Europe and the United States.
Tamara Łempicka, or Tamara Rozalia Gurwik-Górska, was probably born on May 16, 1898, in Warsaw, although both the date and the place of her birth are still disputed. It is known that her childhood years were spent in luxury, with her parents rotating in the company of the wealthy families of Tsarist Russia. As a young lady, she was educated at the girls’ boarding school in Lausanne, from where she often travelled to Poland, France and Italy. Travelling to European capitals helped her learn about the cultures of other countries and sensitized Tamara to the art of the great masters.
Although she lived through turbulent times of political and socio-cultural change, her unwavering determination and need to succeed created a legend of her own. Tamara Łempicka created the persona of an artist of all time.
The exhibition “Tamara Łempicka. A Woman in Travel” is an invitation to the world of the 1920s and 1930s, i.e., to an extraordinary epoch subordinated to the new style, which was art déco. The works of art inextricably linked with the artist’s life, presented in an environment of everyday objects – furniture, handicrafts, costumes and machines – are meant to introduce the visitor to the extraordinary life of Tamara Łempicka, one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
