Polish movie nominated for Palme d’Or

Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) is the main award of the Cannes Film Festival. Among the nominees of the 2022 edition was “Eo”, a Polish film directed by Jerzy Skolimowski. Until now, two Polish movies won the Palme d’Or: “Man of Iron” (1981) directed by Andrzej Wajda and “The Pianist” (2002) directed by Roman Polański. Can we count on another win?

The Official Selection of the Cannes Festival was announced on April 14th by Pierre Lescure and Thierry Frémaux through an online conference. “Eo” (Polish: “Io”) was nominated in the main category. The title comes from the sound that donkeys make, as the story follows a donkey performing in a circus. The animal changes owners to good and bad ones, travels to different countries and ends up in an Italian slaughterhouse. The movie is an allegory of human morality and the fate of animals in our convoluted world.

The script was written by Ewa Piaskowska and Jerzy Skolimowski, who have already worked together on films such as “Four Nights with Anna” and “Essential Killing.” The cinematography is made by Michał Dymek, and it was produced by Skopia Film Productions and Alia Film. The movie was subsidized by the Sub-Carpathian Regional Film Fund and was partially filmed in Rudawka Rymanowska and Stępin (small towns in the region).

The director, Jerzy Skolimowski was awarded the Golden Bear for The Departure (1967), Best Screenplay for “Moonlighting” (1982) and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2016 Venice Film Festival among others.

The 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will take place between May 17th and May 28th 2022.
