Yesterday afternoon, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth the II died at the age of 96. Her reign as head of state of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth nations lasted more than 70 years. For most of her people, she was the only monarch they had ever known. Her place on the throne will be taken by her eldest son, who will take the title of King Charles III.
”Her late majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second, was one of the greatest leaders the world has ever known. She was the rock on which modern Britain was built. She came to the throne at just 25 in a country that was emerging from the shadow of war. She bequeathed the modern, dynamic nation that has grown and flourished,” Liz Truss, the British Prime Minister, said.
The monarch in the UK does not rule, they reign. Experts recall that Elizabeth II stood in the shadow of great politics and more often conducted behind-the-scene activities.
