Polish volleyball players ended the second phase of the World Championships with a 3:2 victory against Germany in the Atlas Arena in Łódź. The white and red players will play in the quarter-finals against very demanding rivals – the Serbian team defending the trophy.
After a sensational victory against the USA in the second phase of the World Cup, the door to the quarter-finals opened wide for Poland. However, Stefano Lavarini’s charges still needed victories against Canada and Germany. The first obstacle was overcome on Friday with huge problems, after a five-set horror. It was no less nerve-wracking on Saturday.
The first set was extremely exciting. After a long ‘fight’, it was the German women who had the first set ball. The Polish team drew, then led, and after a few minutes, they won the first set.
The second set, on the other hand, went badly for Poland. They seemed to be in the lead at the beginning by a few points but then they lost their good rhythm. The German team started to make up losses and eventually won the set.
The fact is that in the third set they played amazingly. All Polish players were extremely determined and motivated. They did not lose any chance to get a point and won that set.
It looked as if the White Reds had followed their lead and would win against German time already in the fourth set. However, it was not so easy. It was almost sure that the Poles would win, but the German women were more motivated which led to a tie-break.
The tie-break started with a lead for white-reds and this time they did not let it slip away. The Polish women finish the second phase of the World Cup victorious.
The Polish team will therefore play against the World Champions Serbian for promotion to the semi-finals. The quarter-final on Tuesday at 8:30 pm.
