Volleyball Women's World Champs: The Polish team lost to the World Champions after an amazing and exciting match

The Polish women’s volleyball team played in the quarter-finals of the World Championships against the defending champions Serbian. Later, however, it was the rivals who had more reasons to be happy. After an unbelievable battle with the favourites, the Polish team lost 2:3 and dropped out of the tournament.

Poland’s volleyball players opened the door to the quarter-finals wide with a fantastic victory against the Olympic champions Americans in the second phase of the World Cup. After dramatic five-set battles with Canada and Germany, the Polish women clinched their place in the best eight of the World Championships after 60 years.

The beginning of the match looked like a clash between the Polish women and Tijana Bosković, who hit the ball effectively all the time. However, even the Serbian team’s star player eventually had to make a mistake. After that, the Poles started to make up losses and eventually won a set.

At the beginning of the second set, the Serbians showed why they are World Champions. Irritated by the result, they played brilliantly and quickly built up their lead. Once there was 21:13 for Serbians, Poles seemed to ‘wake up.’ The White-Reds started to make up losses but unfortunately, the Serbian team was better.

The battle was still on in the third set. The Poles were playing very well, but it was the Serbian team who served better and attacked better. They had no bigger problems with winning that set too.

The Polish women fought, but the World Champions were leading by the almost whole fourth set. Catching up seemed impossible. But… In an unbelievable ending, the white and red players led to a draw and won an advantage!

Tie-break started with a tough point-for-point battle. Emotions were at their peak and the Polish women played like inspired, cheered on by the singing audience. The situation was changing by the minute. Unfortunately, the last Serbian serve was too strong and the Polish player could not handle it.

Despite that it was the last match during the tournament for the Polish team it is worth noting that they played well! Polish women have shown what a great team they create.

    Serbia – Poland 3:2 (21:25, 25:21, 25:19, 24:26, 16:14)
