The 21-year-old Polish tennis player defeated Liudmila Samsonova 6:1, 6:0 in the third round of the WTA tournament in Dubai. The Pole will play in the quarter-finals against Karolina Pliskova.
Swiatek started her struggle in Dubai from the second round. There, she defeated her rival, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez (6:1, 6:1).
At the start of Wednesday’s game, both players seemed to be evenly matched. Samsonova served with great power and was able to handle Swiatek’s serves. As the rallies went on, however, Swiatek gained the upper hand and eventually won the first set 6-1.
Iga Swiatek stayed composed and confident against her Russian adversary, waiting for chances to capitalize on her opponent’s mistakes. The third game was particularly intense, with Samsonova defending breakpoints a total of five times. Despite the difficulty of the game, Swiatek retained her composure and managed to take the second set 6-0.
Swiatek will face Karolina Pliskova (18th WTA) in the quarter-finals.
