In a recent development, the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) successfully detained an 18-year-old man who was allegedly planning a terrorist attack on a government office building in Poland. The suspect, a convert to Islam, had been in contact with members of the Islamic State and was actively preparing for his intended assault.
Addressing the media, Stanisław Żaryn, the Secretary of State at the Chancellery and Deputy Minister Coordinator of Special Services, emphasized the seriousness of the situation and refuted the characterization of the suspect as a “disturbed kid,” as described by some media outlets. Żaryn asserted that the individual was a genuine threat to national security and had meticulously planned an attack with potential devastating consequences.
“It is essential not to downplay the gravity of this case,” stated Żaryn. “We were dealing with a real person who had converted to Islam and expressed intentions to wage jihad within Poland.”
The authorities are taking the investigation seriously, which is why information about the suspect and other intelligence operations is being released to the public with a delay. Żaryn acknowledged the public’s right to know about the activities of security services and the potential threats they face but stressed the importance of preserving the integrity and effectiveness of the ongoing investigations.
The suspect was apparently acting alone in his plans, and authorities are currently verifying whether any individuals in his entourage were involved. “At this point, we believe the person acted alone,” Żaryn stated, highlighting the need for thorough and cautious verification processes to ensure accurate information.
According to investigators, the 18-year-old, who hails from the Ciepłowody municipality, had left Poland with his family at the age of 16 to reside in one of the Benelux countries. It was during this time abroad that he became fascinated with Islam and came into contact with members of the Islamic State. Upon returning to Poland, he continued his association with the extremist group through online communication, engaging with other fighters and gathering information on attack preparation.
In light of the evidence gathered, it was revealed that the suspect had been collecting materials to create a shahid belt, an improvised explosive device meant to cause maximum harm to victims. His target was reportedly the district police headquarters in Ząbkowice Śląskie.
The detained 18-year-old is currently in custody in Wrocław, and reports indicate that he spends much of his time studying the Koran while awaiting legal proceedings. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence ranging from one to ten years.
